It serves as a passenger station for high-speed rail lines, including the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, the Shijiazhuang-Jinan High-Speed Railway, and the Jiaozhou-Jinan Intercity Railway. It is one of the five originating stations on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway and began operations on June 11, 2011.

Layout of Station
The total construction area of Jinan West Railway Station is 100,000 square meters, and the main station building area is 62,534 square meters. The station adopts the design of large-span awning without standing column, so that the passenger can have a broad view. The roof of the station building is also designed with automatic snow melting system and siphon drainage system. The square in front of Jinan West Railway Station is divided into east and west squares. Among them, the West square is 470 meters long from north to south and 110 meters wide from east to west, with a total area of 52,000 square meters; The East Square, also known as "Liyue Square", was put into use in 2013; The above-ground construction area of the East square is about 79,000 square meters, and the underground construction area is about 90,000 square meters. The area of the East square is equivalent to three west squares, and up to 30,000 people can be evacuated. The six bronze carriage statues in the square reflect Qilu culture and also welcome visitors from all over the world.
