The Terracotta Army
Pingyao is a small city in central Shanxi (山西) Province. It’s famous for Pingyao Ancient City, which is a well-preserved ancient Chinese settlement from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Opened in 2014, the Xi’an–Pingyao High-Speed Railway is one of the most important and popular rail lines in China. Over 10 high-speed trains and two normal-speed trains run between Xi’an and Pingyao. The travel time ranges from about 3 to 9 hours.

- Duration: 2 hours 22 minutes (high-speed), 8 hours 33 minutes (normal-speed)

How to Choose Your Train to Xi’an/Pingyao
1. Different Train Types
- High-speed D trains: There are 12 D-trains running between Xi’an North Railway Station and Pingyao Gucheng Railway Station daily. The journey only takes about 3½ hours and costs 150 yuan for a second-class seat ticket.
- Normal-speed K trains: There are two normal-speed / overnight trains operating between Xi’an Railway Station and Pingyao Railway Station daily. It takes about 8–11 hours and costs about 124–139 yuan for a hard sleeper ticket.
2. Different Railway Stations
- Pingyao: All the high-speed trains to Xi’an depart from Pingyao Gucheng Railway Station, but the departure station of all the normal-speed trains is Pingyao Railway Station.
- Xi’an: The arrival station for high-speed trains is Xi’an North Railway Station — other normal-speed trains arrive at Xi’an Railway Station.
