There are three commonly used train stations in Shanghai:

Located in Minhang District, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is one of the biggest transportation hubs in Asia. The total area of Hongqiao Railway Station is over 1,300,000 square meters, which is approximately equal to three Tian’anmen Squares. And it is located in the biggest transportation hub in Shanghai, with airport, subway station and coach station all in the same area.

  • Huge station, crowded but organized: as one of the biggest railway stations in China, you can’t imagine how big this station is, and how many passengers this station is containing everyday (especially during national holidays).   • Shanghai Hongqiao – Hong Kong: There is one high-speed train named G99 (14:10-22:28) running from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station daily. It takes about 8 hours and costs 1008 yuan for a second class seat.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao – Beijing: There are 36 high-speed trains running from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Beijing South Railway Station daily. It takes about 6 hours and costs about 553 yuan for a second class seat. Among them, G8, G2, G10, G4, G14, G16, G18, and G22 are Fuxing Hao trains. These are faster and more advanced, taking only 4 hours to get to Beijing.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao – Hangzhou: There are over 100 high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Hangzhou/Hangzhou East Railway Station daily. It takes about 1 hour and costs about 73 yuan for a second class seat.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao – Ningbo: There are 50 high-speed trains running from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Ningbo Railway Station daily. It takes about 2 hours and costs about 144 yuan for a second class seat.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao – Suzhou: There are over 100 high-speed trains running from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Suzhou/Suzhou North Railway Station daily. It takes about 30 minutes and costs about 34.5 yuan for a second class seat.

  • Shanghai Hongqiao – Guilin: There is only one high-speed train running from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Guilin Railway Station daily. It takes about 9 hours and costs 659.5 yuan for a second class seat.

The Layout of Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station

Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is a large railway station with four commonly used floors, and here are some details about each floor:

  • B1 (subway arrival floor): subway station (Hongqiao Railway Station), four taxi stands (two to the south and two to the north), automatic ticket machines (only for Chinese ID cards), restaurants
  • F1: platforms
  • F2 (main floor): waiting areas, ticket offices, waiting hall, boarding gates
  • F3 (commercial floor): F3 is divided into two unconnected areas. It is a commercial floor with chain restaurants and shops. You can enjoy a quick meal on this floor after entering the main floor, F2.

  • On B1: Yang's Fried Dumplings (selling Shanghai’s local gourmet dish of fried pork dumplings), Ajisen Ramen (a chain restaurant selling Japanese-style noodles), Starbucks, Lao Sheng Chang (Chinese: 老盛昌汤包), and 85°C (Chinese: 85度C), which is a famous bakery café in China.
  • On F2 and F3: Starbucks, McDonald's, KFC, BreadTalk, SUBWAY, Dicos,  Da Niang Dumpling, Burger King, etc.

Ticket Service at Hongqiao Station: Buy, Collect, Refund, Cancel, and Reschedule

There are two ticket halls at the station, one is in the center on F2 with 10 ticket offices (154 ticket windows in total), and the other is on B1 with four ticket windows.

  • Buy tickets: Find one of the ticket windows and hand in your passport to purchase a ticket. Read details: How to Buy a China Train Ticket?
  • Collect online booking tickets: Hand in your passport and your online booking pick-up number to collect your train tickets at one of these ticket windows. Working hours: 05:00-24:00
  • Refund, Cancel, and Reschedule: Go to ticket windows no. 80 to 92 Ticket Office 3 on F2 to submit one of these three requirements.

Luggage Storage Service

There are luggage storage offices located inside and outside the waiting area.

  • Inside the waiting area: There are two luggage storage offices located on both sides of the waiting area on F2.
  • Outside the waiting area: One luggage storage office at the West Entrance on B1.

Charge: 10 yuan for small luggage and 20 yuan for big luggage.

Luggage Porters

You can find the luggage porters on F2. They all wear a red cap or a red waistcoat.
You can ask them to carry your luggage to the train for you, and they usually charge 10 yuan for each piece of luggage.

Metro lines 2, 10, and 17 are available at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Here are the popular stops for these three lines:

  • Metro Line 2: passes through the districts of Qingpu, Minhang, Changning, Jing’an, Huangpu, and Pudong.
    Hongqiao Railway Station, Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2, Zhongshan Park, Jing’an Temple, People's Square, Lujiazui (financial center) and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
  • Metro Line 10: passes through the districts of Minhang, Changning, Xuhui, Huangpu, Hongkou, Yangpu, and Pudong.
    Hongqiao Railway Station, Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2, Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1, Shanghai Zoo, National Chiao Tung University, Shanghai Library, New world of Shanghai, Yu Garden (a famous attraction), and Tongji University (a classic university established in 1907, during the Qing Dynasty).
  • Metro Line 17: passes through Xujing, Zhaoxiang, and Zhujiajiao in Qingpu District.
    Hongqiao Railway Station, Zhaoxiang, Zhujiajiao (a famous tourist water town), Shanghai Oriental Land.

There are two places to take buses around Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station: Hongqiao Traffic Hub East Center (虹桥枢纽东交通中心) and Hongqiao Traffic Hub West Center (虹桥枢纽西交通中心).

  • Hongqiao Hub 4 (上海公交虹桥枢纽4路): Hongqiao Traffic Hub East Center – Zizhu Science Park

  • Shanghai Airport Express 1: Hongqiao Traffic Hub East Center – Shanghai Pudong International Airport T1 – Shanghai Pudong International Airport T2
  • Bus 941: Hongqiao Traffic Hub East Center – Shanghai South Railway Station

Hongqiao Coach (West) Station

Hongqiao Coach Station is at the west side of the railway station and it’s located on B1. After getting off the train, you can go to B1 and follow the signs to reach the coach station (about 500 meters).

Huangpu District is the city center of Shanghai. There are many brand stores, cultural streets, and art sites in this district. We will use People’s Square (in the middle of this district) as an example to show you how to get to the city center.

1. Take Metro Line 2 and get off at People's Square Station.

To Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport

The airport is about 500 meters from the station. You can walk to Terminal 2 and take a subway train to reach Terminal 1:

  • Walk to T2: Go to B1 and follow the signs to get to T2. It takes about 15 minutes.
  • Take a subway train to T1: Take Metro Line 10 at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and get off at Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1 Station. It takes about 25 minutes.

1. Take Metro Line 2 from Hongqiao Railway Station and get off at Guanglan Road Station (广兰路).
2. Transfer to Metro Line 2 East Extended Section from Guanglan Road Station and get off at Pudong International Airport Station.
3. Walk for about 850 meters to get to the airport.

To Shanghai Railway Station, 22 Kilometers

Shanghai Railway Station is located in the city center and it serves trains to Beijing, Kunming, and Nanjing, among others.

>>> By taxi: This journey takes about 50 minutes and takes about 80 yuan.
>>> By subway: Metro Line 2 → Metro Line 3, 11 stops in total (about 50 minutes)

1. Take Metro Line 2 at Hongqiao Railway Station and get off at Zhongshan Park.
2. Transfer to Metro Line 3 inside the station and get off at Shanghai Railway Station.
3. Leave the subway station from Exit 5 and walk 330 meters to get there.

To Shanghai West Railway Station, 17 Kilometers

>>> By taxi: This journey takes about 35 minutes and costs about 60 yuan.
>>> By subway: Metro Line 2 → Metro Line 11, 12 stops in total (about 45 minutes)

1. Take Metro Line 2 at Hongqiao Railway Station and get off at Jiangsu Road Station.
2. Transfer to Metro Line 11 inside the station and get off at Shanghai West Railway Station.
3. Leave the subway station from Exit 2 and walk for 220 meters to get there.
